Since the Slovak Republic joined the European Union, the border of the Slovak Republic with Ukraine is the Eastern border of the European Union. This way the Košice and Prešov self-governing regions became border regions with the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine.

At the same time since Slovakia joined the Schengen Area contacts and cooperation of the Slovak Republic with Ukraine have ceased in all areas of life. This had a negative impact on the economy, bilateral cooperation and mutual dialogue of border regions of both countries. Ukraine’s Agreement with the European Union on Partnership and Cooperation gradually changed the conditions for restoration of cooperation and therefore Slovak Republic offers its know-how to Ukraine in preparation for the transformation process of Ukraine to European structures.
